The Flying Lake

marshlands, Latvia

conceptual proposal, 2021
size: 115 m²
architecture, visuals: Toms Kampars

According to an old tale, a long time ago, all the lakes were flying seeking for a spot to land once they were given a name. The Flying Lake stands as a conceptual design, poised for its eventual landing, currently envisioned as an observation deck nestled within the marshlands, crafted from steel and mirrors.

This enchanting two-level structure harmonizes with nature, both virtually and conceptually reflecting the surroundings to create an illusion of vanishing boundaries. Crafted to seemingly float atop the reeds and ponds, it offers visitors an elevated vantage point, connecting them intimately with the horizon.

The project draws inspiration from the author's profound connection to nature and has been influenced by the constraints imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2021. Along the Baltic coastline and its neighboring flat marshlands lies a spectacular opportunity to experience and relish the wilderness, even though access to an elevated platform, a luxury, might not always be readily available.
